Did you know The Tree of Life was said to allow access to the Celtic otherworld, a realm of the dead and other spirits? In the modern world, the tree is often used as a metaphor for the connection between the diversity of all life on Earth.
For the ancient Celts, The Tree of Life symbolizes balance and harmony. Known in Irish as 'Crann Bethadh' (Crown Bett-ah), this Celtic symbol represents the belief of the interwoven fabric between heaven and earth.
“I'm planting a tree to teach me to gather strength from my deepest roots.” ~Unknown
The Tree of Life is a historical, sacred emblem within Celtic cultural and religious traditions. It's one of their many symbolic crown jewels enshrined on this stoic living organism. Did you know that concept of The Tree of Life is almost as old as humans? Many different global religions including Christianity, Ancient Egypt and Buddhists recognized the Tree of Life in their history. Other geo-cultural areas such as Africa and Turkey also have strong references to the Tree of Life.
The primary tenets of Celtic The Tree of Life are:
The Otherworld refers to the next door dimension. It's often thought of as a two sided mirror of our own world. The Celts believe the Otherworld contains passed souls and oftentimes deities and Gods. The most important facet in reference to The Tree of Life is Interconnectivity. It's the inherent doctrine that all things in all of existence are woven together. There is no separation.
Life is the joy, hardship, relationships, family, work and lessons we experience that allows us to spiritually grow and evolve over time.
Death is the ending of the old self relationship and self-knowing. Whether it's a part of ourselves, a relationship, a leveling up or a physical death of something around us, it is indeed the most powerful of all the Tree of Life tenets. We can experience many deaths in a single lifetime. As our life story rolls on, we understand each death prepares us for the next one.
Lastly, Rebirth is always waiting after death. It's the new beginning that initiates the continuous Tree of life cycle once again.
